Otho-K Night Contacts

About Otho-K Night Contacts

Orthokeratology, also known as "Ortho-K" or "Night Contacts" are a type of contact lenses that reshape the cornea while the user sleeps. The effect is temporary but the patient wearing the contacts can take out the contact lenses when they wake up and have corrected vision throughout the day. Because the effect is temporary, there is very little risk involved when compared to procedures like LASIK.

The process usually starts with a 1-2 week adjustment period where the patient wears the contact lenses at night while sleeping and then wears soft contact lenses during the day until the cornea adjusts to the night contacts. Some patients will notice an immediate improvement but patients with higher prescription (Rx) strengths will likely need the entire two weeks before getting the full effect. The amount of prescription (Rx) needed will start to reduce, and after the adjustment period, patient don’t require glasses or contacts to see. Some patients will will still need to put in their night contacts every night while sleeping, but some can actually just do every other night or in some cases, once per week.

The effect is very successful and has been described as upgrading to an HD television and not being able to go backward to a standard TV. FDA clinical studies show that 93% of patients achieve near 20/20 vision, and 67% actually achieve 20/20 vision or better.

The lenses are made by measuring the curvature of your cornea with a device called a corneal topographer. The device shines a light into your eye and uses that light to create a map of the cornea. The doctor will then typically fit the patient with ortho-k lenses that day, although some prescriptions will require lenses to be ordered or custom made. There is a slight adjustment period to get used to the feeling of wearing and sleeping in the lenses, but over time most patients get used to the feeling, and the lenses become more comfortable to wear.

Optometrists and ophthalmologists are both capable of fitting you with ortho-k lenses, however not all offices offer the option, but we are happy to fit you at Atlanta Eye Center. Typically you will need several office visits to ensure the fit and prescription is correct. That said, there are lenses available for patients with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism or those who need correction at multiple distances like a bifocal or progressive lens would provide (presbyopia).

The prescription (Rx) ranges are also currently limited so you will need to consult with an Atlanta Eye Center doctor to see if your prescription qualifies.

Who are candidates for Ortho-K?

The treatment is suitable for many age ranges and types of vision correction. It is most successful in children ages 8-12 with nearsightedness, and can even be used to slow down the eye from needing stronger prescriptions, keeping any increase to a minimum.

This age range is also typically very active and athletic, and ortho-k correction lets kids move more freely with less likelihood of injury or damage to their glasses or losing a contact lens.

Other ideal candidates include adults who plays sports, people who work in dusty environments that make contact lens and glasses wear difficult, and people not able to have LASIK procedures, either because they are too young or have other factors such as dry eye.
